El Dr. Eduardo Zayas-Bazán nació en Camagüey, Cuba. Tiene una maestría en idiomas de Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, Kansas, y un doctorado en derecho de la Universidad Nacional José Martí, La Habana, Cuba.

En abril de 1961, Zayas-Bazán participó como hombre-rana en la invasión de Bahía de Cochinos. Fue herido y capturado, y pasó un año en la prisión antes de que el gobierno de los EE.UU. pagara un rescate por él y por otros 59 prisioneros que necesitaban urgente atención médica.

Zayas-Bazán es Profesor Emérito de Idiomas de East Tennessee State University. Se jubiló de esa institución en mayo de 1999 después de 31 años de servicio. En ETSU fue jefe del Departamento de Idiomas de 1973 a 1993. En 1978 Zayas-Bazán recibió el premio de Distinguished Faculty de ETSU; en 1983 la sociedad honoraria Sigma Delta Pi lo galardonó con el Premio Martel, que se da cada tres años nacionalmente al consejero más distinguido de un capítulo; en 1989 se le honró con la Jacqueline Elliot Award de la Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association, que se presenta anualmente por servicios distinguidos a un educador de idiomas al nivel universitario. En 1981 Zayas-Bazán fue electo presidente de la TFLTA; en 1985 fue presidente de la American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese; en 1990 fue seleccionado presidente de la Asociación Nacional de Educadores Cubano-Americanos, de 1994 a 2002 fue jefe de su junta directiva, y presidente otra vez de 2003 a 2004. Desde 2004 es su tesorero. El  año 2000 fue electo por dos años presidente del Municipio de Camagüey en el Exilio. De 2002 hasta mayo de 2007, fue el director de El Camagüeyano Libre, la revista del Municipio de Camagüey. Ha sido miembro de la junta directiva de Herencia Cultural Cubana y ocupó la vice presidencia de esa organización hasta abril de 2007.

De 1994 a 1998 el profesor Zayas-Bazán fue director asociado de Hispania, la revista de la American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. Además de escribir artículos en revistas regionales y nacionales, Zayas-Bazán es co-autor, co-editor y traductor de dieciocho libros. Dos de sus libros de texto de español, ¡Arriba!, y Conexiones, publicados por Prentice Hall, se enseñan en más cien universidades. Es el coautor de El pez volador, una novela histórica publicada en 2007. La versión inglesa de la novela, The Flying Fish, salió al mercado en 2009.

El Dr. Zayas-Bazán vive en Miami, FL y está casado con Lourdes Abascal.

In April of 1961, Zayas-Bazán participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba as a frogman. He was wounded in his right knee, captured, and spent one year in prison before being ransomed with fifty nine other wounded prisoners that needed urgent medical attention in the United States.

Zayas-Bazán is a Professor Emeritus in Foreign Languages from East Tennessee State University. He retired from that institution after 31 years of service in May of 1999. At ETSU he was chair of the Foreign Language Department from 1973 to 1993. In 1978 Zayas-Bazán was the recipient of ETSU's Distinguished Faculty Award; in 1983 he was presented Sigma Delta Pi's Premio Martel, given every three years to the nation's outstanding chapter advisor, and in 1989 he was honored with the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association's Jacqueline Elliot Award, presented annually for outstanding service in foreign language higher education. In 1981 Zayas-Bazán was elected president of the TFLTA; in 1985 he became president of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese; in 1990 he was voted president of the National Association of Cuban-American Educators, became chair of its board of directors from 1994 to 2002, and then president again from 2002-2004. He has recently been elected its treasurer. In 2000 he was elected for two years President of the Municipality of Camagüey in Exile. From 2002  to January 2007 he was the editor of El Camagüeyano Libre, the periodical of the Municipality of Camagüey in Exile. He has also been a member of the board of directors of Cuban Cultural Heritage and seved as its as vice president until May of 2007.

From 1994 to 1998 Professor Zayas-Bazán was associate editor of Hispania, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to writing numerous articles in regional and national journals, he is the co-author, co-editor and translator of eighteen books. He is the coauthor of a historical novel, El pez volador, published in 2007. The novel is being published in English as The Flying Fish in 2009.
The fifth edition of his textbook, ¡Arriba!, originally published by Prentice Hall in 1993, is being used at some 100 colleges and universities. He has just finished the fourth edition of Conexiones, an intermediate Spanish textbook first published by Prentice Hall in 1999, and is now working of the sixth edition of ¡Arriba!

Professor Zayas-Bazán is married to Lourdes Abascal and lives in Miami, FL.
