Dr. Eduardo Zayas-Bazán was born in Camagüey, Cuba, and is a U.S. citizen since 1968.
- In 1961, Zayas- Bazán participated in the Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba as a frogman, was wounded and captured, and spent one year in prison.
- Doctor en Derecho degree from Universidad Nacional José Martí, Havana, Cuba.
- M.S. in Foreign Language Education from Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia, KS.
- Professor Emeritus in Foreign Languages from East Tennessee State University, and chair of the Foreign Language Department from 1973 to 1993.
- Recipient of East Tennessee State University’s Distinguished Faculty Award; Sigma Delta Pi’s Premio Martel; and the Tennessee Foreign Language Teaching Association’s Jacqueline Elliot Award.
- First Cuban-American elected President of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese and of the National Association of Cuban-American Educators.
- Former President of the Municipality of Camagüey in Exile and the editor of its periodical, El Camagüeyano Libre.
- Former Vice President of Cuban Cultural Heritage.
- Former associate Editor of Hispania, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
- Co-author, co-editor and translator of eighteen books. Three of his most successful books are ¡Arriba!, Conexiones, and Fusión, published by Prentice Hall and used at some 150 schools and universities in the U.S. and Canada.
